My earliest memory of my daddy is snuggling up for bedtime stories. He
shared his childhood by telling me of the "Leatherman," who stayed in a cave
and came through his boyhood home area a couple times a year. He also told
me about the "Light House," bobsledding, and swinging birches. ( I tried
swinging a small pine tree and looked like a mummy after Daddy picked bark
out of my scratched arms and legs and bandaged me. He was a caring and
understanding Dad.) He also read to me each evening, often from the
classics. I especially remember Heidi and Treasure Island.
Although Daddy worked long hours in the drug store he always had hugs,
kisses, candy and often toys for me. He also made time to teach rope tricks
to any children or relatives who showed any interest. Dad also enjoyed being
in the woods with us as well as the scouts. We spent many Sundays roaming
the woods looking at birds, trees, plants, rocks and land forms.
Every Saturday I went to work with Daddy at Loveman's Dept. store. (He
had the pharmacy.) We would roam the store during his lunch hour and eat at
the lunch counter in the basement. On our Saturday rides to work Daddy
taught me many songs. Through these songs and stories he instilled the
importance of sharing, looking for and doing good, and remembering to laugh.
He always said that education and travel can never be taken from you. He
expected Gordon and me to study and took our family on many trips around the
US. His love of singing and playing the harmonica were life long joys for
him. In his last years he would sing and share the good news, "God Will Take
Care of You."
