Harriet Lucy Day b. 8/13/1905 d. 8/24/1997 m. Franklin Bouteiller 6/30/1934.
They were an unusual couple for their time. Both had careers. Harriet was an
educator, and Frank ran a bus company and had a machine shop. They had no
children, but had 23 nieces and nephews in Harriet’s family alone, and were
active in their lives.
In the 1950’s they purchased land in Winthrop,
Maine, and built a cottage. They were very social people, and the Bee’s Nest,
as it was called, was open to family and friends alike. I think half of the
people of Barkhamsted had visited the cottage at one time or another.
Over the machine shop in Pleasant Valley, they built
a recreation hall, which was used for a variety of activities. Political events,
activities of local clubs and organizations, and fundraisers for the Barkhamsted
Center Congregational Church (card parties and square dances) kept the place
hopping.
I can attest to the fact that for a few people in need they were always
there. They were the kind of people that cared; they always did what they could.
And if you knew them over the years, you knew how deeply devoted they were to
each other.
